Look at the colors in the picture... the hills, the ground, and even the cabbage are vibrant in their hues. I think Munch's goal in this painting was to express the energy needed to farm, or in more general terms, just to work. The bright colors help the background to be dynamic, so one is taken in by the excitement of the surroundings, not just by the man in the field. The farmer man is a key figure in expressing how much the energy it takes to work the field; just look at his face.
